Description: The Society’s office is in the Village Hall. It collects material relating to the history of Chester. In 1990, the Society acquired the 1915 Erie Railroad Station.

Description: The Warner House, dating to the 18th century sits on 280 acres of gardens & hiking trails in the middle of the Hudson Highlands.

Description: The Florida Historical Society Museum is located in a building owned by the Village of Florida. It was originally built as a shed on the John Weed property and is located on Cohen Circle, behind the Village Hall. In 1997 The Florida Historical Society remodeled this structure in Greek revival style for use as a museum to house Florida documents and artifacts.

Collections: The collection consists of photographs, postcards, written documents, newspaper clippings, historic books and artifacts relating to the history of the Florida, NY area.

Programs: Program on local history to the 4th graders, scholarship to graduating senior involved in a local history project. Annual display of the locally made cutter sleigh decorated for the holidays at the Provident Bank.    

Special events: Annual Seward Day Celebration, held near the May 16th birthday of William Henry Seward, who was born in Florida, NY in 1801. Display at annual Florida Family Fun Fest.  Boy Scout and Girl Scout tours of Museum.

Description: Fort Decker is owned and operated by the Minisink Valley Historical Society. It is the oldest building within the city limits of Port Jervis.  A 1773 stone house built on the remains of an Indian fort used during the French and Indian War. Mohawk Indian Joseph Brandt and his military forces burned it in July 1779. Fort Decker later served as a headquarters for D&H Canal engineers in 1826. The fort is a starting point for the 5-mile Delaware River Heritage Trail

Programs:  Exhibits on the building’s history, the impact of the Civil War on the region and 19th century quilts and coverlets

Description: The oldest house on the Historic Register in Orange County. Luis Gomez, a Sephardic Jew, built the “Gomez Mill House”- the oldest extant Jewish residence in America. Continuously occupied since 1714 by a succession of owners, including patriot Wolfert Acker; gentlemen farmers of the Armstrong family; world famous papermaker & craftsman Dard Hunter, the Starin family and preservationist and suffragette Martha Gruening.

Description: A living history museum depicting the final winter encampment of General George Washington’s army in 1782-1783.  On April 19, 1783 the cease-fire that ended the Revolutionary War was announced here.  The state historic site maintains 110 acres of the original encampment. The site includes five buildings, two museums, a working blacksmith shop, a 16th century log structure and a reconstruction of the first army chapel and meeting hall in the country.

Collections: 3000 artifacts relating to the site’s Revolutionary War history. Manuscripts and deeds of the Clinton family (1756-1846), of Robert Burnet and the Burnet family, documents, photographs of local historic sites, archaeological materials recovered from the site.  The museum houses a continually expanding archive of military records from Purple Heart recipients.

Fees charged.

Programs:  Daily demonstration of log-hewing, woodworking, blacksmithing, musket drill and firing.  Summer demonstrations include cannon firing, soap and candle making, open hearth cooking, period-style gardening. Self-guided walking tours; cooperative tour with nearby Knox/s Headquarters.  Off-site programs on soldiers, medical practice and a first-person portrayal of original cantonment residents.  Exhibits: “Winter of Liberty, 1782-1783,” “Last Argument of Kings,” “Artillery of the American Revolution,” “The Continental Soldier in Camp.”
