Description: The Putnam Arts Council is located in a two story stone and wood structure built at the
turn of the 20th century. It includes two galleries, museum shop, pottery studio, workshop space and a darkroom.
Collections: The Bernard & Maria Hassell Collection of Student Art; The Contemporary Collection
of Professional Art.
Programs: Daytime, evening, weekend and after-school classes in the visual and performing arts; a
summer art program for children 6-13; monthly exhibits including invitationals, theme shows and a juried Fine Arts Show, Art in Public Places and Resident Arts Groups in Photography and Pottery.
Special events: Concerts, poetry readings and theatre performances; Annual Gallery Craft Sale each

Description: An outstanding example of Federal architecture. Built by States Morris Dyckman between
1804-1808, the mansion is furnished with Dyckman possessions and Federal furniture made in New York. Boscobel is maintained and interpreted by Boscobel Restoration, Inc.
Collections: Late Federal period furniture & decorative arts, books on Federal period decorative
arts and architecture. The archives contain the original Dyckman papers and scrapbooks, photographs of the restoration of the house, some oral histories.

Programs: Docent-led tours: school loan exhibits; extensive program for grades K-12 complementing
NYS curriculum; workshops on bandboxes and flower crafts: decorative arts exhibits. School programs include a pre-visit kit.

Description: The society’s mission is to preserve the history of the Town of Carmel which includes
the hamlets of Carmel and Mahopac.
Collections:
Photographs, personal papers, newspapers and maps. Poorkeepers’ records from 1768-1812; Town & County minutes; the ledgers of several local businesses: old photographs, family albums and postcards. Hallway gallery of the hamlets of Mahopac & Carmel. Long term exhibit rooms, e.g. 1900-1945 Country General Store: Items are from the Samuel Hickman’s store, which was located at Route 6 and Church Street (“Hickman’s Corners”) in Carmel.

Description:
One room schoolhouse in use 1900-1944, houses a collection of school house artifacts. History of Farmers Mills, a large five mill town that no longer exists.
Collections:
Artifacts of one room schoolhouse, photographs of local people, slide collection of Putnam County people, places and things. Oral history of area residents. Sybil Ludington memorabilia. Two out houses (boy’s and girl’s), mill stone, tools and gears to Ludington Mill.

Description:
The Society owns and operates two landmark buildings. The Old Southeast Church (1794) is an unmodified example of early rural ecclesiastic architecture. The Walter Brewster House (1850). Is an example of Greek Revival architecture. The Society works to recognize and document the historic sites and buildings in Putnam County with an emphasis on the Town of Southeast, and to educate the public about their importance.
Collections: 19th-century paintings, photographs, furniture, heating/cooking devices,
contents of Old Southeast Church, religious artifacts.
Programs: Bus tours of town historic sites for 4th graders. Self guided walking tours. Lectures on local history, restoration workshop-tour, slide show. Midnight bell ringing in Old Southeast Church on New Year’s Eve.

Description: The only 20th century modern home open to the public in New York State. Wrights’ “Dragon Rock” experimental/studio home is built on the rock ledge of an abandoned quarry. (The house is closed for restoration.) There are four miles of paths on the 75-acre landscape with links to the Appalachian Trial.

Description: The Putnam County Archives & Historian’s Office maintains an archive and library
of materials relating to Putnam County and the region.
Collections: The Archives maintains governmental records of Putnam County. including deeds, court records, probate, board of supervisors, overseers of the poor, rural school records, etc. (see Archives series description on the web site). The Putnam County Historian
’s Collection consists of non-governmental historical records on such subjects as Drew Seminary, cattle drovers, menageries, county politics, civic/social organizations, the iron
industry and family history (see Historian’s Collection series description on the website) and collection of photographs, slides & postcards relating to Putnam County. The Library holds books, pamphlets, periodical/reference work concerning Putnam, regional and state history as well as family histories, including all available federal and state census, cemetery records, town record books, and church records, newspapers, and original/photocopied maps. Ongoing exhibits:
exhibits on Putnam history are always on display at Historian’s Office. Exhibit panels on variety of subjects are available on loan at no charge (see web site for subjects).
